W When I was growing up p my favour rite toy was s my bike. Luckily, L bec cause of wh here I liv ved and be ecause my parents let me have a a lot of free edom, I cou uld ride it a lot. I re emember co oming hom e from scho ool and goi ing out on my m bike to the park, or o just ar round the s streets. Now w I’m a pa rent myself f, and I wo rry that chi ildren can’t t play ou utside in the e same way y I used to. . There is s o much mo ore traffic — — it just isn’t t safe fo or them to c cycle by th emselves. I decided to t start a ‘P Playing Out t’ session i n my st treet. We cl ose the roa ad for three hours once e each fortn night. Then the children n can pl lay in the ro oad, like I us sed to. They y ride bikes s, they skip, they draw on the road d with ch halk. It’s am mazing. Som me local res sidents wer ren’t sure ab bout it at fir rst, but now w they ca an clearly s see the ben nefits. Even n people who w don’t ha ave children n come into o the st treet and jo oin in. ‘Pla aying Out’ i is quite dif fficult to org ganize bec cause you need pe ermission f from local government g t to close the t road, and a you ne ed at least t four ad dults to be r responsible e for the chil ldren, but it ’s definitely y worth the t trouble. A Alison Y You could a always tell I was going g to be an engineer. I loved con nstruction b ricks, ev ven when I was very small. s That’ s one of the e best thing gs about the e toy, of co ourse. It doesn’t ma atter if you’v ve got tiny hands, you u can still b uild a castle e, or a car, , or a ro obot … and d then you can make e something g complete ely different t with the same s pi ieces. Som me boxes of f bricks com me with a set s of instru uctions to h help you bu uild a pa articular pla ane or build ding. I used d to build th hat once, an nd then all the pieces went in nto a big pla astic tub in my m bedroom m. I spent many m hours building my y own creat tions. I think cons struction br ricks have changed since I wa as little. T There are more sp pecialized p pieces, like e different w wheels and d connector rs. And I re eally don’t think th here should be ‘pinkifie ed’ boxes o of bricks ‘for r girls’, whe ere the colo ours are diff ferent an nd the spec cialized piec ces are flow wers and pe ets. They sh ould be ban nned! F rank I’m m the youn ngest child in my fam ily. Perhap s I’m a littl e bit bossy y and a litt le bit sp poilt. Anywa ay my favou urite games s always inv volved tellin g people wh hat to do! I used to o make my p parents and d my older s sisters hide my soft toy ys around th he house. I used to o pretend th he toys were e in trouble and my sis ters were th he ‘baddies s’. Then I’d dress d up p as a sup perhero and d run aroun nd rescuing g them. Or, if my fam ily were bu usy, I w would play h hospitals w ith the soft t toys. I wa as the docto or, of cours se, and the e soft an nimals used d to have lo ots of injurie es and illne sses. I used d to put ban ndages on them an nd put them m in bed. I really r loved those toys and I even took one s special bear r with m me to univer sity.
